Little Rock is in the southern state of Arkansas and was relatively progressive.
On September 4 a crisis erupted and Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas, called out the National Guard to prevent African-American students from attending Little Rock Central High School.
The students had been chosen to attend Central High, because of their excellent grades.
It was the first day of school, and only one student showed up she did'n recive a phone call because the call was the danger of going to school.
